Your checklist
  • Get low

Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

A closed door buys you time.

It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

People have died by going back into a fire.

Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

All sorts of benefits

Volunteering is one of the most rewarding things you can do - for your community and for yourself. The team you join, the skills you learn and the experiences you’ll have are just some of the great reasons to volunteer.

Give your time, get new skills

Nothing prepares you for how much you’ll learn through volunteering. You’ll sharpen your existing skills and find new ways to put them to work. You’ll also learn many new skills to use in the brigade, and in life.

Firefighters and Medical First Responders attend formal training courses locally or at a training centre, which can be week-long. There’s also medical co-response training for Volunteer Firefighters and some Operational Support crew, as well as leadership training and online learning.

A team like no other

Teamwork is at the heart of every brigade, and our entire organisation. Every volunteer role helps us all, and the friendships you form will last a lifetime. You’ll develop great teamworking skills and get the chance to join in community and sporting events, even nationwide firefighting challenges.

Make your community safer and stronger

There are so many ways to give back through volunteering. You could fight fires, attend incidents and emergencies, hold and attend community and brigade events, help people install and maintain smoke alarms, even inspire others to volunteer and protect what they love.

Extras

As a volunteer you’ll have access to:

  • Free annual health checks
  • Free flu, tetanus and hepatitis B vaccinations
  • Annual reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses
  • Loss of income payments for time taken off work when attending formal training courses
  • $50 family/ whānau allowance when you’re away overnight at formal training
