Your checklist
  • Get low

    Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

    If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

    A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

    Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

    A closed door buys you time.

    It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

    People have died by going back into a fire.

    Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

SHOSHY PERCHIG-GIBLI (Chair)
Shoshy Perchig Gibli

Shoshy draws on over 20 years of tourism business, education and community experience and 12 years of career counselling. Shoshy has a background in social sciences in the education sector. Shoshy has recently relocated to Christchurch and is working with high school students to build pathways and connections to help them in their future employment. Shoshy still keeps close ties with the West Coast communities she is involved in and is currently a Toki Pounamunamu Education Trust Board member.

CHRIS REA (Deputy Chair)
CHRIS REA

Chris is a business owner and long-time volunteer firefighter. His governance experience includes roles with Westland Holdings, Destination Westland, Development West Coast and education boards. He is a former Chair of the West Coast Rural Fire Authority. He brings operational and governance insight from both public and private sectors.

TERRY DONALDSON (Member)
Terry Donaldson

Terry works in coal mining operations and has governance experience in education and animal welfare. A former firefighter and SPCA Chair, he currently chairs the Māwhera Kahui Ako Stewardship Group and serves on the Barrytown School Board.

HEATH MILNE (Member)
Heath Milne

Heath is a CEO of Development West Coast and previously held senior roles in the international meat trade. He brings deep knowledge of economic development and has worked extensively with UK and EU agencies on trade advocacy.

TAANE JOHNSEN (Member)
TAANE JOHNSEN

Taane is a Business Development Manager at Westland Milk Products with a background in mining and risk management. He chairs the Rural Advisory Group for Adverse Events and holds leadership roles in farming-focused trusts and fire brigades. He is a current volunteer firefighter.

SAM SPEIGHT (Member)
SAM SPEIGHT

Sam works as a West Coast Catchment Coordinator with Landcare Trust and is a volunteer firefighter. His background includes conservation and biodiversity roles with the Department of Conservation and Nelmac, including international firefighting deployments.
