Southland moves to an open fire season from 8am today (29 March).
An open fire seasons means you do not need a permit to light a fire in the open air.
District Manager Julian Tohiariki says the recent wet weather conditions and cooler days have prompted this change.
"We’re now comfortable about relaxing the restrictions in the area, particularly now that river levels have risen and water restrictions across the district have lifted," he says.
Julian Tohiariki says he is pleased with the responsible burning that occurred over summer.
"We’re just asking for this to continue. An open fire season means you do not need a permit to light, but there is still an expectation that people take sensible precautions if they do decide to light.
"This includes avoiding lighting fires when strong winds are forecast, keeping an eye on your fire at all times, having resources available to control a fire, and making sure it’s completely out before departing," he says.
