Fire and Emergency received calls for 27 incidents during today’s strike

Fire and Emergency New Zealand received calls for 27 incidents between 12 pm and 1pm today, Friday 25 September, the sixty-fifth time the New Zealand Professional Firefighters Union (NZPFU) has taken strike action.

 Of the 27 incidents, 15 were in areas impacted by the strike. 11 were false alarms, three were minor fires.

 There was also a well involved house fire in Ranui, Auckland.

 Acting National Commander Megan Stiffler says Fire and Emergency was first notified of the fire by a 111 caller at 12:45pm.

 "A volunteer crew from Laingholm was first to arrive at the scene at 12:51pm followed by two further volunteer crews from Waitematā and Bethells Valley stations.

"They were later joined by additional paid crews following the conclusion of today’s strike action.

 "Thankfully no one was in the house at the time of the fire. Approximately seven crews remain at the scene, and the fire is now under control.

 "We acknowledge and appreciate the dedication of the volunteers and Operational Commanders who responded to these incidents and the Communication Centre Managers who coordinated the responses. We also recognise the volunteers and staff across the country who have managed the 65 strike responses to date.

 "We continue to call on the NZPFU to call off these reckless strikes.

 "Fire and Emergency remains committed to achieving a fair and sustainable settlement so we can continue working to keep communities safe," Megan Stiffler says.
