Your checklist

  • Get low

    Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

    A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

    Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

    A closed door buys you time.

    It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

    People have died by going back into a fire.

    Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

Call emergency services as soon as you are out and safe. Ask for FIRE.

Clearly state your address and let the operator know it anyone is still inside or has not made it to the safe meeting place.

Fire and Emergency accepts fleet inquiry findings and apologises for shortcomings

Fire and Emergency New Zealand has acknowledged significant shortcomings identified by the Governance and Administration Committee's inquiry into fleet management and is committed to transparent action in response.

The Committee's report, released today, follows evidence and hearings examining the condition and management of the fleet, procurement, the introduction of appliances into service and the accuracy of previous responses provided to the Committee.

Fire and Emergency accepts the findings of the report and acknowledges its recommendations.

Board Chair Raveen Jaduram says Fire and Emergency accepts the organisation did not perform to a high enough standard in several important areas.

"The report identifies unacceptable delays and weaknesses in setting procurement requirements, contract management and governance oversight."

"Firefighters and communities are entitled to expect better. We apologise for the shortcomings and for the frustration and concerns this has caused."

"The Board accepts that previous oversight of fleet strategy, major procurement and delivery did not meet the standard required. The Board and senior management are accountable for ensuring the lessons from this inquiry result in lasting change."

"Since coming into the role at the end of June I have made my expectations clear. Fire and Emergency is introducing several initiatives to strengthen fleet procurement, reporting and management practices including clearer accountability, stronger oversight of delivery and risk, and more transparent reporting to the Board on planned delivery dates, performance against those dates, and significant issues requiring attention."

"Fire and Emergency also apologises for the inaccurate and untimely information provided to the Committee.

"The MAN/Angloco Type 3 programme has taken far too long, and we accept responsibility for shortcomings in its planning and delivery. Appliances will enter service as soon as they are ready to be deployed. We will not compromise firefighter safety or operational readiness," Raveen Jaduram says.

"I also want to acknowledge the report’s conclusion recognising the thousands of dedicated firefighters and Fire and Emergency staff across New Zealand who are dedicated to serving our communities. I want to reassure the public we remain focused on keeping our communities safe," Raveen Jaduram says.
