Your checklist
  • Get low

    Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

    If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

    A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

    Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

    A closed door buys you time.

    It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

    People have died by going back into a fire.

    Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

Fire & Emergency New Zealand

Cyclone Gabrielle Update #4

Cyclone Gabrielle Update #4

The number of people calling 111 for assistance in Cyclone Gabrielle is increasing in Northland, Auckland and Coromandel.

Fire and Emergency logged 41 storm-related incidents from 4-5pm, bringing the total for the previous 12 hours to 305 (note that this is a rolling 12-hour period).

Of the 41 incidents logged between 4-5pm, 15 are in Northland, 16 in Auckland, 9 in Waikato and 1 in Bay of Plenty.

Fire and Emergency is prioritising the response to calls where life and safety is at risk. Currently these include:

  • evacuations, floodwater entering a house and a tree which fell on a car in Kaipara District;
  • a collapsing water tower, people trapped in a car and lifting roofs in Auckland;
  • a landslide into a house and flooding in Thames-Coromandel District;
  • helping with evacuations in Opotiki.

Fire and Emergency’s Auckland Response Manager Nigel Dravitzki is asking people to remember to call 111 when life and safety are at risk, so the people who urgently need help can get through to our communications centre.
