Your checklist
  • Get low

    Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

    If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

    A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

    Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

    A closed door buys you time.

    It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

    People have died by going back into a fire.

    Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

TRACEY WRIGHT-TAWHA (Chair)
TRACEY WRIGHT-TAWHA

Tracey is a CEO of Ngā Kete Mātauranga Pounamu Charitable Trust, which provides wide-ranging health and social services across Southland and Otago. She also chairs Ōraka Aparima Rūnaka and is committed to wellness initiatives and advocates for equity in Māori health and wellbeing.

GARY TONG (Deputy Chair)
GARY TONG

Gary is a former Mayor of Southland and a retired Senior Constable. He also managed Borland Lodge and chaired organisations including Koha Kai and the Borland Lodge Trust. He has been involved in governance for St John, education, boat clubs and community boards and brings decades of leadership to the region.

TRACY HICKS (Member)
TRACY HICKS

Tracy served as a Mayor of Gore for 18 years and chaired regional collaborations including the Southland Mayoral Forum and Southern Leadership Group. He played a key role in responses to the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter challenges and has extensive governance and project leadership experience.

BERYL WILCOX (Member)
BERYL WILCOX

Beryl chairs the South Invercargill Urban Rejuvenation Trust (South Alive) and has worked across health, education and community service. She has represented Southland in many consultation groups and was awarded the MNZM in 2022 for services to the community.

ALISTAIR MCKENZIE (Member)
ALISTAIR MCKENZIE

Alistair is a chartered member of the Institute of Directors and has served as director and chair across a range of industries including sport, health, hospitality, aviation and primary production. He is focused on delivering outcomes that reflect Southland’s unique needs.

HIMANI GALBRAITH (Member)

Himani is a liaison for Family Works and Director of Southland Migrant Walking Together, which supports cultural identity among Indian tamariki. A former Hindi School Trust Chair and teacher, she is passionate about supporting migrants and community participation.

CARLA HARPER (Member)
CARLA HARPER

Carla is a Southland Area Manager for FMG and has over 20 years in financial services. She has served on the Southland Chamber of Commerce Board, Love Local Trust and completed the Agri Women’s Development Trust Escalator Programme. She is an intern Director at South Port and a chartered member of the Institute of Directors.

CHRIS DILLON (Member)
CHRIS DILLON

Chris is an arable farmer and former President of Southland Federated Farmers. He has governance experience through Ardlussa Community Board and the National Federated Farmers Arable Executive. With 23 years in the local fire brigade, Chris brings firsthand emergency response knowledge.

JOHN TWIDLE (Member)
JOHN TWIDLE

John recently led the Heritage and Ngāi Tahu partnership stream for the Milford Opportunities Project. He has served on numerous conservation and education trusts and continues to play an active role in hazard planning and environmental stewardship for Fiordland.
