Your checklist
  • Get low

Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

A closed door buys you time.

It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

People have died by going back into a fire.

Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

Nelson Tasman area moves to open fire season

Fire and Emergency New Zealand has returned the Nelson Tasman area to an open fire season from 9am on Friday, 2 May, until further notice.

An open fire season means people can light outdoor fires without a permit approved by Fire and Emergency.

Fire and Emergency Nelson Marlborough District Manager Grant Haywood says even though the area is now in an open fire season, people must continue to take care when lighting any fire.

"People should follow the safety guidelines and check it is safe to light a fire by visiting www.checkitsalright.nz," he says.

"Although recent weather has reduced the fire risk to low to moderate, that does not mean there is no risk."

Tokongawa and Sandy Bay will remain in a prohibited fire season, and St Arnaud will remain in a restricted fire season, which means a fire permit is required.

Once people have checked it is safe to light a fire at www.checkitsalright.nz, they should then monitor and control any burn until it is out, fully wet down the fire to extinguish it and check the over the next week for any smouldering or heat.
