Your checklist
  • Get low

Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

A closed door buys you time.

It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

People have died by going back into a fire.

Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

Two Nelson South structure fires on Wednesday

Fire crews responded to two structure fires in Nelson South on Wednesday.

The first was a garage fire which Fire and Emergency New Zealand crews were alerted to around 10am.

Four crews responded from Nelson and Stoke. The fire was under control around 11.30am and extinguished by 12.30pm.

The second was a house fire in which crews were alerted to around 9.55pm.

Six crews attended the fire, again from Nelson and Stoke, which was well involved upon arrival. It was extinguished around 12.25am on Thursday.

Fire and Emergency Nelson-Marlborough Assistant Commander Chris Best says the house had no working smoke alarms.

"This is a timely reminder to ensure you have working smoke alarms in every bedroom, hallway and living area as the occupants were fortunate to get out alive."

The causes of both fires are under investigation.
