Your checklist
  • Get low

Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

A closed door buys you time.

It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

People have died by going back into a fire.

Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

South Marlborough moving to restricted fire season

Fire and Emergency New Zealand is moving the Marlborough South area into a restricted fire season from 8am, Thursday 11 December, until further notice.

A restricted fire season means anyone planning on lighting an open-air fire will need a permit. You can apply for a permit at www.checkitsalright.nz.

Declaring the restricted season, Nelson Marlborough Group Manager Chris Hayles says the area is rapidly drying out, increasing the fire danger.

"While the countryside still has a green tinge in some places, locals understand how quickly conditions can change as we have seen over the last couple of weeks with the hot, dry weather we have had," he says.

"Signage will be installed throughout the District this week as an extra reminder for the locals and visitors to our District."

Parts of South Marlborough have seen significant drying and grass curing, meaning any fire that escapes will be difficult to control.

"These fine fuels are readily available to burn and can create fast moving grass fires when backed by strong winds.

"Putting in a restricted season gives us an added layer of protection.

"It doesn’t mean people can’t burn, but having a permit allows our team to have awareness of what is burning and where, and to provide safety advice to those conducting any open-air fires."
