Your checklist
  • Get low

Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

A closed door buys you time.

It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

People have died by going back into a fire.

Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

Parikino and Waiinu fire updates #3

Parikino

A vegetation fire at Lismore Forest near Parikino is now contained.

Incident Controller Nigel Dravitzki says today ground crews continued work to extinguish areas of deep-seated fire, supported by heavy machinery.

"I would like to thank all our hard-working crews for their efforts this week. It has been arduous work across steep terrain, and they have done a fantastic job.

"We expect to continue our operations until Sunday with a hope to hand the site back to the forestry owner on Monday."

Waiinu

A vegetation fire at Waiinu Beach in South Taranaki is now completely contained.

Incident Controller Nathan Jones says crews spent today strengthening containment lines.

"We had 18 people on the ground supported by heavy machinery, trucks, and support vehicles.

"I’d like to thank the crews and contractors for their mahi getting this fire contained. They’ve been working around the clock all week and have done an outstanding job."

Nathan Jones says they’ll be moving to a monitoring phase at the end of today which will continue for a couple of days.

This will be our last update on both fires unless there are any significant changes.
