Wellington diesel spill update
6 January 2026
Fire and Emergency New Zealand crews are at the scene of a large diesel spill in Wellington this morning.
Incident Controller Mike Dombroski said crews were first alerted to the incident at Aotea Quay near the overbridge to Hutt Road around 3am.
"A diesel road tanker has hit a road barrier, and we estimate up to 4000 litres of fuel has spilt.
"We currently have three pumps, a command unit and a water tanker on the scene.
"We had a hazmat unit in attendance earlier this morning who helped to contain the spill.
"We are now waiting for the fuel tanker company to decant the remaining fuel from the truck before roading contractors can arrive to assist with further cleanup using roading sand."
Mike Dombroski says there are road closures in place and asks the public to avoid the area.
