Your checklist
  • Get low

Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

A closed door buys you time.

It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

People have died by going back into a fire.

Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

Tongariro National Park Fire Update #9

Firefighting has been suspended overnight on the Tongariro fire, with Fire and Emergency keeping crews on duty to monitor the fire. Conditions are forecast to be favourable on the fireground overnight.

Offensive firefighting will resume tomorrow morning, with both air and ground operations planned. Firefighters will be drawn from both Fire Brigades and the Department of Conservation.

The evacuation of the Whakapapa Village is complete, with Police checking properties to ensure that everyone has left.

The fire is estimated to have burnt about 2500 hectares, and is 20 percent contained.

Assistant Commander Craig Gold has reiterated the advice to people living in the vicinity of the fireground, that they stay alert to the fire, with information updated regularly by media and on Fire and Emergency’s District Facebook page www.facebook.com/ManawatuWhanganuiFENZ/. Residents who feel unsafe or are vulnerable to smoke are encouraged to self-evacuate and stay with family or friends.

The Manawatu-Whanganui Emergency Management Group is providing support for people in the community who are affected by the fire. Call 06 3528750 to reach their Horizons Welfare Line for advice and support.

SH47 Waimarino to Tongariro remains closed between the intersections with SH 48 and SH46 with no detours available.
