Your checklist
  • Get low

Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

A closed door buys you time.

It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

People have died by going back into a fire.

Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

High winds a fire danger in Hawke’s Bay

Fire and Emergency New Zealand is warning Hawke’s Bay people to avoid lighting any fires during the current windy weather.

Community Risk Manager Nigel Hall says people should also check any existing burn piles to make sure they are fully extinguished.

'Windy weather is the perfect condition for old fires to reignite and escape,’ he says.

'If you’ve been burning vegetation any time in the last few months or so, check the fire is completely extinguished.

'If there’s hot ash, and it’s safe to do so, dig into it, spread it out and pour water over it.’
