Your checklist
  • Get low

Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

A closed door buys you time.

It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

People have died by going back into a fire.

Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

Broken gas main closes road in Otaki

Just after midday a digger struck a gas main between Arthur Street and Rahui Street on the main road in Otaki which is the old State Highway 1.

This section of the road is now cordoned off to both north and south bound traffic until further notice while the gas main is repaired.

Traffic management is in place.

Two Fire and Emergency New Zealand trucks from Otaki, one from Waikanae and one from Paraparaumu are attending to provide cover. A support vehicle from Levin and the Hose Layer from Remutaka are also in attendance. There is currently no danger to people but we ask them to stay away.

The leak is expected to be repaired this afternoon.
