Your checklist
  • Get low

Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

A closed door buys you time.

It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

People have died by going back into a fire.

Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

Mount Maunganui landslide update

Fire and Emergency New Zealand’s specialist Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team continues to work closely with Police on the search for persons unaccounted for at the Mount Maunganui landslip in the Bay of Plenty.

The landslide impacted a campground at Mount Maunganui at 9.31am on Thursday 22 January.

Assistant National Commander David Guard, Regional Response Coordinator, says teams have worked overnight. Progress has been slow but consistent as USAR teams carefully remove layers of debris and heavy machinery is on site to assist.

“We are operating in a complex and high-risk environment,” David Guard says. “We will continue the operation until the search is complete.

“Our thoughts remain with the families of the people unaccounted for.

“We ask people to avoid the Mount to allow emergency services to have the space to work safely.

There is still a high risk from further landslides in the weather affected areas. If you or anybody else is in a life-threatening situation, please call 111.”

From 1am Tuesday to 7am today (Friday) Fire and Emergency crews have responded to 306 weather related callouts from Northland to the Coromandel, Bay of Plenty and Tairawhiti.

We have demobilised our specialist water rescue teams from across the North Island where they were pre-positioned to support isolated communities ahead of the forecast severe weather.
