Your checklist
  • Get low

Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

A closed door buys you time.

It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

People have died by going back into a fire.

Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

In 2024, all District Fire Plans were reviewed and finalised. However, some changes to the Nelson Tasman and Waikato Fire Plans are needed, which require a formal public consultation.

The changes are:

  • Nelson Tasman Fire Plan:
    • Changes to the Waimea Zone to the thresholds on Page 53:
      • Adding grass-curing to support the thresholds for decision making about restricted and prohibited fire seasons. This recognises the vulnerability of the forestry sector to the variety of uses in the intersecting grassland.
      • Adding the word recommend to the midpoint access restriction on page 54, to indicate that we don’t own the rights of access or restriction.
      • Inclusion of Kohatu Motorsport Park in the list of recreation locations in the Waimea Basin on page 52.
      • Land Cover/Land Use statement additional wording added to clarify the forestry activities occurring within this area on page 48.

  • Waikato Fire Plan:
    • Changes to Coromandel zone to allow for lower threshold to move to restricted fire season during peak visitor summer season.
