In the early hours of 16 May 2023, a tragic and fatal fire occurred at Loafers Lodge Hostel in Newtown, Wellington. Fire and Emergency New Zealand extends our condolences to the whānau, families, and friends of those whose lives were lost.

We extend our gratitude to all our crews and to New Zealand Police and other first responders who attended the fire , as well as to residents and community members for their cooperation and understanding during this tragic event.

Be Helpful: Wellington City Mission has set up a donation appeal to help give much needed urgent assistance to affected residents and their whanau.

Be Patient: Adhere to any road closures or delays. These are in place for the continued safety of the community and may remain for some time. Minimise travel through the affected area to enable emergency services to carry out their duties effectively. Local traffic management updates are available at Waka Kotahi. Bus services are also affected, with information available at Metlink.

Be safe: The roof of Loafers Lodge contained some asbestos material. This will be kept damp on-site until it is removed, preventing asbestos being released into the air. While there is there is no public safety risk in the surrounding area, nearby residents can choose to keep windows and doors closed. If there is dust around your property, you can also remove shoes before entering your house.

Incident Summary

Just after midnight on 16 May 2023, a fire broke out at Loafers Lodge in Newtown, Wellington. Firefighters were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they encountered a significant fire affecting part of the building.

An evacuation process was started, to confirm the safety of remaining residents and nearby properties. Necessary safety measures, including road closures were put in place to secure the area and safeguard the public and emergency responders.
